Thermo Scientific ARL SMS-3500 Integration

Thermo Fisher Scientific · ARL SMS-3500

Integration, field installation and commissioning of a Thermo Scientific ARL SMS-3500 cell with FANUC handling, intelligent sample storage, milling and surface preparation, OES/XRF spectrometry, machine vision and RMS radioactivity detection. Custom C++ software and drivers on QNX connect the cell with plant SCADA systems and the production database.

Integrated system scope

  • FANUC robotized sample handling
  • Milling and metal-sample surface preparation
  • Optical emission (OES) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry
  • Optional machine vision checks prepared-surface quality, rejects unsuitable samples before trial analysis, and selects suitable OES spark positions for difficult samples; the brochure lists a 2-second surface-inspection cycle
  • RMS radioactivity detection for metal samples
  • QNX software interfaces and industrial communications

ARL SMS-3500 field footage

Original commissioning footage of the automated ARL SMS-3500 cell, showing integrated sample storage, preparation, analysis and in-line evaluation for continuous, high-volume metal production.

Engineering challenge

Coordinate reliable sample handling between the FANUC robot, preparation equipment and Thermo Scientific analytical instruments, while maintaining clear communications with laboratory control software.

Engineering contribution

FANUC cell integration, field installation and commissioning, plus custom C++ software and QNX drivers connecting the cell with plant SCADA systems and production data.
